🇺🇸 Look, these days I've made a change in the focus of this newsletter.
The first is the name... "Beyond the Game" tries to describe what I'm going to share here, things that happen outside of the game.
I feel that this space is evolving at the same time as I am. As I mentioned before, I'm taking a training in personal finance and investments, while I'm making a process of reorientation of my professional career accompanied by Flor, I'll tell you who and what she does, but now let's continue.
In "beyond the game" I will share articles that catch my attention about financial management of athletes, investments, partnerships, brands, activations and about the events I will organize in the future.
One of the things I will be adding (keeping in mind that most of my subscribers are native Spanish speakers) will be the Spanish version below.
And now that I've told you about the changes, let me tell you about Serena Williams. She herself says on her social media that while playing tennis was her Plan A, she was working on her Plan B: as an entrepreneur and investor. In 2014, she founded Serena Ventures, a venture fund specifically designed to invest in female founders, underrepresented founders, black founders, and Latino founders, and became a vehicle for change.
In his personal portfolio, he has invested in more than 85 companies and owns about 14 unicorns (according to Fortune, the term refers to a "privately held startup with a valuation of $1 billion or more"). Companies that achieve this status are considered "innovative or disruptive" and are expected to grow rapidly. According to the media outlet, unicorns include ride-sharing company Uber, vacation property company Airbnb and social media platform Pinterest, among others.
For the 14 companies in which Williams has invested, this is an important milestone, and with this financial support, they will have the opportunity to expand their reach and achieve longer-term goals.
But the most striking thing for me is the fact that Serena has considered from the beginning that her athletic career would end at some point. I suppose the fact that she started a hedge fund has a lot to do with the fact that her husband is a well-known investor, but beyond that, for me it is very important that she decided to work on this Plan B, to gain knowledge and, above all, to continue to be a vehicle for change.
What do you think?
And that's it for today!
