🇺🇸 How do top athletes plan their finances?

Financial planning is important for anyone, but even more so for elite athletes, who earn large sums of money in a short period of time.
This can lead to a sense of security that often causes them to make the same financial mistakes at a young age and with a lack of experience. The most common expenses are usually in the purchase of sports cars, adopting a high standard of living, being the friend who always pays for everything, without foresight for the future.
Elite athletes receive very high salaries, but their income is very limited in time, which is a special and different labor characteristic from the average worker. In addition, depending on the sport in terms of duration as an elite athlete, their income will be affected by the characteristics of their contracts, their results, their sporting achievements, in the case of women if they decide to become mothers, and of course, their injuries.
In any case, the majority of elite athletes have a limited number of years of very high income, which they then cease to have. Therefore, it is essential that they manage their assets well in order to continue to have resources when they stop earning these high amounts of money.
Therefore, it is imperative that athletes have a fundamental understanding of the basics and even, if they need it, having financial advice is a good way to go so that they understand what they invest their wealth in and how best to manage it, according to their own interests.
The importance of the long term is fundamental, with a financial plan based on life goals is a good way to deal with that time lag of income, giving peace of mind for the future to continue to have all the resources generated during their career, while being able to benefit from taxation.
Some choose to plan their finances with two retirements in mind. The first corresponds to their retirement as an elite athlete. The second corresponds to their final retirement, as we generally understand it. Not everyone generates sufficient resources during their professional sporting career to retire definitively when they finish it. A good strategy is to create a transition fund with enough money to have a margin to find a profitable activity after finishing with the highest level of competition. This transition is not easy and can be emotionally complicated, so financial peace of mind during this period is important.
