🇺🇸 What they DON'T TELL you about PROFESSIONAL TENNIS

If we only think of those players who play the big tournaments, that we see them constantly on television, even taking the champion trophy week after week, seeing them on the covers of prestigious magazines or doing collaborations with major brands; we tend to think that they lead a life full of luxury and that it is so with everyone who plays tennis....
But for the 1% of players we see in these positions, we find almost 99% who try to survive to try to fulfill their dream of being a professional tennis player. Many even try to have a job to be able to support their life as a tennis player.
To understand this, let's look at what exactly does it cost to participate in an ITF tournament? How much income can players expect to earn?
ITF tournaments are the first tournaments a player faces and according to what Abraham Asaba shared in an interview (being 1700 in the world ranking), the expenses he had to participate in a M15 Futures Tournament in Texas, being one week:
Flights -700 U$D
Food -239 U$D
Hotel -429 U$D
Tournament fee -40 U$D
TOTAL -$1408 U$D
Looking at Abraham's results, in singles he reached the second round and the prize he received was 258 U$D. In the doubles draw he lost in the first round and received 54 U$D, so that week he won 312 U$D.
Now, considering the income and expenses that Asaba had for this tournament it is easy to deduce that it is very complicated to make a living from tennis until you have a good position in the ranking, which allows you to qualify to better tournaments, be able to pay those expenses and even make a profit.
Expenses: -1408 U$D
Income: 312 U$D
Total -1096 U$D
Many of the tennis players who participate in this type of tournaments as professionals, need to have extra financial support. Some get it through a job (flexible that allows them to train and travel), others receive the support of parents and/or grandparents with money that finance their careers, or that the federation of their country, a brand or academy is set in the player and help to reduce expenses.
Below you can visually appreciate the year 2018 of tennis player Noah Rubin (reaching that year his best position in the ranking 125th).
It's really tough for players who can't get into the TOP 100, and many of them spend long years competing in tournaments in the hope of not getting injured, accumulating more points and moving up the rankings.
But the few winnings they can get in the lower level tournaments, the few aids to advance in the ranking, along with the lack of sponsorship opportunities or external sources of money, make them barely able to cover the various demands of the sport, thus producing a constant financial stress, where anxiety and depression haunt many of these players, which makes some of them eventually drop out.
Even so, of the few possibilities of success and being able to live from it, it is still a dream of many and that hope is what makes them consider starting a career as professionals (even I myself had that moment, I'll tell you about it...).

That's all for today.
